Erik Deckers – Do People Love To See You Coming…. or Going?
When people see you walk into a room or they look down at their phone and see it's you calling them, they have one of two immediate, emotional responses.
Oh, Good or Oh Shit!
Which response they have is your personal brand, according to today's guest on the Get Ya Some Radio Show, Erik Deckers, author of Branding Yourself.
Fortunately, to a large degree, the response they have is something you can, maybe not control but, at least manage.
That's all personal branding is: reputation management.
You can't be a big success without knowing a lot of people and having a lot of people know you, but you have to take the smarmy factor out of your self-promotion efforts with two simple strategies:
Authenticity.
You have to promote yourself online. You have to talk about your accomplishments, talents, and skills. But you have to be likable. Don't fake being likable. Be someone likable and live that life online and off
Generosity.
Givers gain. When you do something nice for someone, don't keep score. Do it because you're a decent human being. That person may never be able to repay your kindness, but have faith that your actions will eventually put you in the right place at the right time to meet the right person bearing the right opportunity.
